From steam distillation of the seeds of wild carrot, Daucus carota, a very special essential oil is obtained with nourishing, disinfectant and regenerating properties for skin and hair. Moreover, the carrot seed essential oil has also a deep purifying and draining action, helpful against water retention, toxin accumulations and cellulite. Let’s see in detail the properties and the possible uses.

Acne and dermatitis

Carrot essential oils is antifungal, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory. It has been demonstrated to be able to inhibit, thanks to its active substance, the carotol, the Candida strains and bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, the most common cause of skin infections, acne and dermatitis, or Pseudomonas aeruginosa, another cause of infections and ulcers (Orchard et al, Evid Based Complement Alternat Med, May 2017). Thanks to these characteristics this essential oil is useful to counteract acne, pimples, eczema and psoriasis.

Wrinkles and sun damages

Carrot essential oil is a powerful antioxidant (Shebaby et al, Phytother Res, May 2013). For this reason, the essence can be used to fight the aging processes, the wrinkles, sunburns and sun damages. You can add it to the formulations of your DIY face and body creams or you can mix a drop of essential oil to a little of your daily cream or to a drop of argan oil and apply. A scientific study has indeed observed that emulsions for face creams prepared with carrot essential oil in a percentage that varies from 2 to 6 % are able to rejuvenate and regenerate the skin tissues (Singh et al, J Cosmet Laser Ther., 2019).

Hair

Thanks to the anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, nourishing and antioxidant properties, carrot seed essential oil may be useful to counteract itching and dermatitis of the scalp, dry and brittle hair. You can prepare a mask by mixing 3-4 drops of carrot essential oil and two tablespoons of grapeseed oil, massage on the damp scalp and leave on for about 30 minutes, then wash the hair with your shampoo.

Detox

Add 3-4 drops of carrot essential oil to a tablespoon of a plant based oil, such as sunflower, wheat germ, jojoba or grapeseed oil. Use this lotion to massage the legs from bottom up in order to remove retentions and toxins.
