Aromatherapy can be an ally against anxiety, sadness, nervousness and depression, without side effects and easy to put into practice. Of all the essential oils that nature makes available to us, some have proven to be more effective in improving mood and relaxing. Are we just talking about beliefs or traditions? No, of science! In fact, as we will see on the basis of very recent scientific studies, some essential oils more than others are capable of acting on the brain and neurotransmitters, bringing relaxation and calm. These are the essential oils rich in particular active ingredients such as linalool, geraniol, citronellol and limonene, for example lavender, bergamot, chamomile and geranium (Agatonovic et al, Adv Exp Med Biol, 2020).
Lavender essential oil is one of those essences to always have with you, that you can diffuse in the room before going to sleep, smell on a handkerchief during the day, spray on the face if added to a floral water or apply on the body through relaxing massages. As scientifically proven, lavender improves mood, reduces anxiety and mental stress, caused for example by exams or jobs that require great mental effort, and improves the quality of sleep. Not only that, a massage using a carrier oil and 1.25% lavender essential oil was able to counteract depression after pregnancy. It is believed that lavender oil is capable of inducing relaxation and calm at the level of the limbic system, acting directly on the amygdala and hippocampus (Toda et al, Contemp Clin Trials Commun, 2020).
Bergamot essential oil is appreciated for its ability to promote sleep and minimize the effects of anxiety and stress. Scientific studies have observed that bergamot is able to modulate specific neurotransmitters and produce an anxiolytic effect, without causing sedation, unlike commonly used drugs such as diazepam (Rombolà et al, Int J Mol Sci, 2020). Bergamot essential oil was also able to reduce stress and anxiety indicators, such as cortisol and alpha amylase in saliva, in patients waiting for surgery. In this case, the beneficial effect was obtained by smelling two drops of bergamot essential oil, which can be poured onto a handkerchief (Pasyar et al, Complement Ther Clin Pract, 2020).
Chamomile essential oil is recommended against anxiety and stress. It has been observed that a mixture of lavender and chamomile essential oil, widespread in the room, has reduced anxiety in case of very stressful jobs, such as that in the hospital (Zamanifar et al, J Med Life, 2020). Not only that, massages prepared with a carrier oil, such as sweet almond oil, enriched with essential oils of chamomile and lavender calmed anxiety and improved sleep quality in patients hospitalized for burns (Rafii et al, Burns, 2020).
With its sweet fresh aroma, geranium is considered a remedy for anxiety and insomnia, but also for the feeling of frustration, nervousness, anger, worry and restlessness. You can spread this essence in the room, one drop per square meter. In this way, in addition to more serenity, you will also get another very important benefit! In fact, as reported by scientific research, the essential oil of geranium modulates the immune system and is a further ally in the fight against respiratory tract infections (Senthil Kumar et al, Plants, 2020).
