Marjoram, origanum majorana, belongs to the Lamiaceae family and is well appreciated in cooking as a spice to make the dishes tastier. From the leaves of marjoram, through steam distillation, an essential oil with calming, relaxing, antispasmodic, painkilling and expectorant properties is obtained. The essential oil is contraindicated during pregnancy, breastfeeding and in small children. Let’s see the main applications.
Headache, neuralgias, pain, stomach cramps
Marjoram essential oil can be used to soothe muscle and joint pain, is able to relax rigid muscles and contractions, results useful in case of low back pain, arthritis but also headache, especially if caused by stress, neuralgias and stomach cramps. In order to bring relief to the muscles you can prepare a warm bath by adding to the water 10 drops of marjoram essential oil. Stay in the water for 10-15 minutes and massage the muscles. Alternatively you can do massages by mixing a tablespoon of a plant based oil, such as wheat germ oil or sweet almond oil, and 5-6 drops of marjoram essential oil. This massage has painkilling properties but it is also relaxing and heating, for this reason it is able to counteract the condition of feeling cold in case of bad circulation. A drop of essential oil of marjoram, if applied and massaged on the forehead, as well as breathing from a handkerchief during the day the aroma of two drops of essential oil can be helpful in case of headache.
Cough, cold
You can prepare steam inhalation with a balsamic and expectorant action. Heat a pot full of water, remove from the heat and add 4-5 drops of marjoram essential oil. Cover the head and breathe the aroma.
Nervous tics, insomnia
You can add ten drops of marjoram essential oil to the water of the bath in order to help your body to relax. Moreover, it is also possible to diffuse the aroma in the room. Add a drop of essential oil each square meter of the room in the oil burner and breathe the scent of this oil.
