The mushroom studied by the research performed by the Chang Gung University of Taiwan and published on Nature Communications is Ganodermo lucidum, also called reishi. This mushroom is only used in powder to prepare a tea and is supposed to have a role in slowing down the increase of the body weight.
According to the study the activity of reishi is localized on intestine by modifying the bacteria, by selecting those that are able to perform a proper digestion and by removing the others. The experiment has been demonstrated that by giving reishi to rats fed with a diet rich in fat these rats show a lower weight than the rats that did not receive the mushroom.
Other studies will be performed but this could be a first breakthrough to treat obesity and the effects in health related to it.
