With a scented and fascinating aroma cinnamon is a spice that can make yummier snacks, breakfasts and cakes. You just have to add a pinch of cinnamon to the yogurt, to the filling of the dessert, to the coffee or to the chocolate in order to give a special and also, according to scientific studies, healthy note. In fact, cinnamon is helpful to lower blood sugar and insulin resistance in case of type 2 diabetes and prediabetes. However, if it is very easy to find several studies about the effectiveness of cinnamon in case of already present health disorders, the same cannot be said for the action of this spice on healthy people. What happens in this case? Cinnamon helps the body work better or lowers excessively the blood sugar? Well, according to a study published in the International Journal of Food science by a team of Medipol University of Istanbul (Kizilaslan et al, 2019), cinnamon on healthy people is a valid aid to improve blood sugar levels, by regulating them and optimizing the work of the body, but let’s see better in detail.

The 41 participants to the study, all healthy, have been divided into 3 groups and have been followed for 40 days. During this period the first group was asked to take 1 gram per day of cinnamon, the second group was asked to take 3 grams per day of the spice and finally the third group was asked to take 6 grams per day. After 40 days it was found that in all the groups the levels of blood sugar, both before and after the meal, resulted improved. Then, these changes were not excessive and this means that the effect of cinnamon on the blood sugar levels of healthy people, that already show normal blood sugar levels, is just a regulating action, thus helping the body to work properly and in an efficient way and by contributing to keep the levels under the limits. In particular, really beneficial have been proven to be the doses of 3 and 6 grams per day of cinnamon.

However, the problem of the study is that it is very limited, in fact the sample analyzed is small. In any case, it has the advantage of shedding light on the beneficial role of cinnamon on healthy people that can include in their diet, without fear, this precious spice.
