Coronavirus, what to do and what not to do

Coronavirus, what to do and what not to do

Novel coronavirus is a sanitary emergency that is changing temporarily our lifestyles. This means that we have to modify for a limited period of time our habits, to make some renunciations reducing sociality to block the growth of the virus. To limit the infection Governments and WHO have released important and general guide lines, we’ll repeat in the following. Then, we’ll speak also about some warnings. Indeed, we should be careful about fake information, in this case we have just to refer to the guide lines of governments, official bodies and scientific results.

Coronavirus, general guide lines

Here are the general guide lines to follow:

  • It is important to maintain a safe distance between people of at least 1 meter, or 3 feet.
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with hands. In fact, hands could be contaminated and if you touch your face the virus may be transferred and enter the body.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or a handkerchief when you cough or sneeze. Then throw immediately away the handkerchief
  • Stay at home if you feel unwell and call your doctor.

Coronavirus, pay attention to fake news

It is important, to defend ourselves from coronavirus, to wash often the hands that are one of the favorite surfaces for the virus. According to WHO, hands have to be washed often for at least 20 seconds with water and soap. In alternative or in addition you can use an alcohol based handrub formulation that contains at least 60% alcohol. On the internet you can find alcohol free disinfectant formulations, sometimes with essential oils. Although nature is powerful at the state of the art and according to WHO only solution of water and alcohol can kill the virus. For sure you can add essential oils to a ready solution of water and alcohol, some of them are antimicrobial and may help for the hygiene of the hands in addition to having a good smell, but for sure some drops of an essential oil will not be able alone to counteract novel coronavirus. Handrub formulation can also be prepared at home, WHO indeed has given the recipe that you can find in Natural Remedies.

Coronavirus, the distance between people and the incubation period

WHO indicates that the distance between people that should be maintained is at least of 1 meter. A research published a few days ago in the journal Practical Preventive Medicine and performed in China has caused a lot of claims. In fact, the study states that the safe distance should be at least 4,5 meters and that the virus survives in air for 30 minutes on the basis of an observation that a patient in a bus has infected other people that were at a distance of 4,5 meters. The study has been criticized a lot for the way it has been carried out. Indeed, it raises too much questions that remain without answers. For example, it is not explained why a person at a distance of 4,5 meters was infected while a person that was near the patient 0 not. Maybe this is one of the reasons why the study has been withdrawn. So, the fact that the study has been withdrawn means that it cannot be defended and as a consequence, for now, is applied the knowledge that we have and that is that the 1 meter is the minimum safe distance.

Also for what concerns the period of incubation there is no clarity, somebody says 1 day other 1 month. WHO says that incubation period varies from 1 to 14 days, with an average of 5 days.

Coronavirus, alcohol disinfects hands and is not to drink

Alcohol kills the virus. It is true, but just if it is applied on hands and surfaces. On the contrary, in some countries it has spread a believe that drinking a lot of alcoholic drinks could be useful to destroy the virus. This is not true, on the contrary, the excessive intake of alcohol may cause a weakening of the defenses, especially for those concerning the respiratory tract (Sarkar et al, Alcohol res, 2015), and, as we have seen in these days, can cause also more serious consequences.
