From the grapes the remedy that protects the bones

Some antioxidants of the polyphenol family are among the most precious allies for the health of the bones! In fact, these substances that are found in fruit and vegetables, and in particular in grape seeds, are able to protect the health of the bones, both in women in post menopause, and therefore with a greater risk of developing osteoporosis, and in case of surgical and dental interventions on the bones. This emerges from recent scientific research that appeared in the Scientific Reports of the prestigious Nature group thanks to the work of a Japanese team (Tenkumo et al, Scientific Reports, 2020).

Polyphenol for the health of the bones

Previous studies had had the opportunity to show that the flavonoids, which are antioxidant substances of the polyphenol family and are contained in fruit and vegetables, are able to improve bone density in women of all ages, younger and older. Not only that, the polyphenols of the olives have proven to be able, in 12 months, to ensure continuous bone remodeling, in which new bone tissue takes the place of the old bone tissue, in women in post menopause. Finally, research has shown that including in diet the grape, a precious source of polyphenols, allows to improve the use of calcium and to restore the normal bone remodeling process in animals that have a drop in estrogen, just as it occurs in women in post menopause, which have a greater risk of developing loss of bone density and osteoporosis. So, given these results that testify to the association between polyphenols and health of the bones and the fact that the grapes are rich in polyphenols, especially contained in its seeds, scientists have decided to perform a study to evaluate the protective action of the seeds of the grapes on the health of the bones.

Grape seeds, the best friends of the bones, the study

As mentioned, the grape seeds are one of the richest natural sources of proanthocyanidins, which are powerful polyphenols. The scientists thus conducted a laboratory study on populations of mice that presented a drop in estrogen, thus mimicking the conditions in post menopause. The research emerged that the regular intake of grape seed extracts has allowed, in 3 months, to prevent and contrast the loss of bone density. Not only that, scientists have also tested any applications of grape seeds and their medical extracts, in particular in the case of surgical and dental operations in which a bone and an implant are connected, as in the case of dental implants or of screws to stabilize the spine. Well, the intake of grape seed extracts has speeded up the healing of the bone concerned and has allowed a faster integration between bone and implant, even in conditions of a drop of estrogens.

Conclusions

The grapes are delicious and when it is season they should never be missing on the tables. But above all, it is important not to remove their seeds, but to consume them as the grape seeds are one of the richest sources of proanthocyanidins. These antioxidant substances have shown that they have antidiabetic properties and are able to contrast obesity, they are anti -inflammatory and anti - free radical as well as anticancer. And from today we know that the proanthocyanidins also protect bones, contrasting the loss of bone density, osteoporosis and facilitating and speeding up the bone healing processes, also improving the results and reducing recovery times in case of surgical and dental operations.

Alternatively, it is also possible to find the grape seed extract, which is found in specialized and online stores. In this case, however, ask your doctor for advice to exclude any interactions with drugs in use. In fact, these extracts can interfere with the coagulation of the blood and the drugs that regulate it, but also with blood pressure and blood sugar. As regards the dose and times of use, see the indications shown on the package. From the grape seeds you can also obtain a special oil, rich in proanthocyanidins, grape seed oil! When indicated on the label, this oil can also be taken orally.
