In an antioxidant the secret of long life

In an antioxidant the secret of long life

How to extend life while preserving health has always been human's primary interest. Researches, remedies, plants and medicines have been and are being analyzed to understand if it is possible to extend the duration of life and at the same time the years spent without diseases. Today we know that there is a natural antioxidant substance that can slow down aging and protect health, as emerges from a recent scientific research published in the prestigious journal Nature Communications thanks to an exciting work conducted by a team of scientists from the University of Graz, Austria (Carmona Gutierrez et al, Nature Communications, 2019).

How to turn back the hands of the biological clock

With our medical knowledge we are able to extend life expectancy. However, we don't always manage to keep disease at bay. Indeed, advancing age is precisely the main risk factor for diseases such as tumors, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative illnesses. So what can be done to slow down the aging of our body cells and preserve health? Nowadays we know that there are some antioxidant substances, such as polyphenols, among which resveratrol stands out, and some lifestyles, such as calorie restriction, capable of slowing down the biological clock. However, it must be said that caloric restriction must be achieved without reaching malnutrition and therefore it is a very difficult and complex technique that must be applied, in case, only under the guidance of experts, avoiding do-it-yourself. Given the objective difficulty of calorie restriction, science is always looking for new anti-aging substances. And today science found another of these substances, a flavonoid, the flavonoid 4,4 -dimethoxicalcone or DMC. But let's understand better.

Discovered a new natural anti-aging flavonoid, the study

DMC is a natural flavonoid that researchers have isolated in the stems and leaves, but not in the roots, of the plant Angelica keiskei koidzumi, commonly known by its Japanese name Ashitaba, which it means, almost prophetically, the leaf of tomorrow. The researchers tested the action of this flavonoid in the laboratory by putting it in contact with yeasts, flies, worms, human cells and then administering it to mouse populations. What emerged was that this flavonoid actually slows down aging. In fact, DMC has been able to extend the life of yeasts, flies and worms, has been able to protect mice from heart disease and to decelerate the senescence of human cells, which is the irreversible arrest of the cellular life cycle. Therefore, when it undergoes senescence, which is a physiological process, the cell no longer renews itself, does not grow, does not divide and gradually loses its functions. And, as emerged from the study in question, this anti-aging function is performed by DMC by stimulating autophagy. Autophagy is the process by which the cells of our body feed on parts of the cells themselves, such as proteins, which are no longer used. By doing this and eliminating waste, the cell renews itself and thus keeps diseases such as diabetes, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and cancer away. The study of cellular autophagy led, in 2016, to the awarding of the Nobel Prize to Yoshinori Osumi, the scientist who has devoted so many years to studying this topic.

Warnings and conclusions

The research is still in its infancy, the dosages for a possible administration are not yet known and therefore a lot of work still remains to be done. However, the article certainly has the merit of bringing out how much the natural world, and in particular antioxidants, can provide us with what we need to stay healthy for a long time. So, at the moment, waiting for the science to take its course, it is important to guarantee us the antioxidants that, as we know, are contained in fruits, especially berries and citrus fruits, vegetables, such as garlic, onions and crucifers, and drinks such as green tea. In addition, ashitaba can also be included in one's diet as it is available in supplement form. Alternatively, it is possible to cultivate the plant. In any case, since interactions and side effects are not yet known, it is always good to always consult your doctor first.
