Whether in the form of juice, zest or essential oil, bergamot can be truly beneficial, as emerges from very recent scientific research published in the journal Nutrients thanks to the work of an Italian team from the University of Messina (Russo et al, Nutrients, 2024).

The dangers of chronic inflammation and how to reduce it

Inflammation is the weapon against threats to our health, whether bacteria, viruses, fungi, toxins or tissue damage. However, once the threat is defeated, inflammation as a protective process of the body must go away. Sometimes, however, inflammation remains at a low but chronic level. What to do to combat chronic inflammation? It is certainly important to act on your lifestyle, trying to eat in a varied and balanced way, keeping stress under control by using techniques such as meditation, drawing, gardening or any other hobby that you may like, but also practicing moderate physical activity and sleeping the right number of hours per night. However, there are also some foods that are particularly useful in reducing inflammation. For example, we can mention green tea, spices such as turmeric, saffron and ginger, oat, fruit and vegetables in general, especially bitter vegetables, but also yogurt. And from today we know that bergamot can rightfully enter this small list of anti-inflammatory foods.

How bergamot reduces inflammation

The study analyzed and compared the results of previous research, which clearly shows that bergamot can help counteract inflammation. And this happens using bergamot in different forms. For example, bergamot essential oil is a concentrate of terpenes and other antioxidants such as bergamotin. Bergamot essential oil is widely used in the preparation of infusions or as a perfume.

But bergamot essential oil also has a powerful anti-inflammatory action, very useful for combating asthma and lung inflammation in general.

Then, there is also bergamot juice, which also has an interesting anti-inflammatory action. Bergamot juice has been shown to counteract inflammation of the oral cavity and gums. Not only that, bergamot juice reduces the harmful effects caused by overweight, obesity and metabolic syndrome, decreasing markers of inflammation and helping to keep cholesterol, triglycerides and blood sugar under control. Finally, bergamot juice has also been shown to protect the gastric mucosa, brain and skin from damage caused by inflammation. Bergamot leaves also proved to be very interesting, capable of reducing chronic inflammation especially in cases of obesity. Bergamot peel reduces liver inflammation and fatty liver.

Bergamot appears to be a very versatile ally in the fight against chronic inflammation, with benefits for the entire organism. We have seen that bergamot, both in the form of essential oil, but also of zest or juice, all remedies easily available in herbalist's shops, pharmacies and grocery stores, reduces chronic inflammation and protects the airways, lungs, skin, brain and digestive tract. There are also bergamot leaves on which science has begun to focus its attention, but at present it is not easy to find supplements based on this remedy, as it is very new.

Bergamot, contraindications

Bergamot, if taken in moderation, is considered safe and without particular side effects. However, be careful if you are taking any medications and ask your doctor for advice. In fact, the bergamottin contained in bergamot, both in the form of essential oil and peel of juice, can interact with some drugs, such as atorvastatin from the statin family, some antihypertensives and diabetes drugs (Zhang et al, Xenobiotica, 2022 - Goosen et al, Clin Pharmacol Ther, 2004).
