Everyone is talking about it and everywhere the trend of proffee, or protein coffee, is going crazy. The original recipe involves making a smoothie with coffee, milk and protein powder. However, it is this last ingredient that could cause concern, but let's clarify better. Proteins, especially when eaten at breakfast, nourish and support muscles more than when taken at other times of the day (Kim et al, Front Nutr, 2021). Not only that, a protein-rich breakfast will keep you full and reduce hunger pangs (Leidy et al, Am J Clin Nutr, 2013). The protein powders that can be found on the market, however, often contain sweeteners and other substances to improve their appearance and flavor and over which we, who buy, therefore have no control. Sometimes protein powders can also cause gastrointestinal upset. So today we will see how to make a protein coffee without adding protein powder, perfect to enjoy at breakfast!
1 cup of coffee (prepared with moka pot or instant coffee)
200 ml of vegetable milk
1 teaspoon of cocoa powder
1 teaspoon of chia seeds
1 teaspoon of flax seeds
1 teaspoon of pumpkin seeds
1 teaspoon of sunflower seeds
1 tablespoon of cashews
Soak the pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and cashews for a few hours.
Then drain the seeds and cashews and blend them with a coffee grinder together with the chia and flax seeds until you get a puree. Pour the puree into the glass of the hand blender. Add cocoa and, if you wish, a teaspoon of maple syrup to sweeten. Add also the vegetable milk and coffee. Blend and pour into a glass, your protein coffee is ready. If you wish and you like to enjoy this cold smoothie you can add ice cubes. Otherwise you can heat it up quickly.
