Annurca is an apple native to Campania, a region of South Italy, and is also considered the queen of all the apples. Why is it so important? Because this apple is characterized by powerful and interesting properties on health and beauty, all well demonstrated by scientific researches. Annurca apple contains indeed high quantities of polyphenols and results able to keep under control the levels of cholesterol. According indeed to a study published in 2017 on the Journal of the science of food and agriculture by a team of University Federico II of Naples, the intake of this apple was able, in four months, to reduce the values of total cholesterol and LDL, the bad cholesterol, and to increase at the same time the HDL cholesterol, the good one (Tenore et al, J Sci Food Agric, May 2017). In addition to this, thanks to its content in procyanidin B2, an antioxidant, this apple plays a role in keeping the hair healthy by counteracting hair loss and hair low density and by increasing instead hair growth, the number of hair and its content in keratin, a protein that constitutes the hair and makes it healthy, elastic and glossy. It has also been demonstrated the mechanism of action of extracts of annurca apple with which this fruit protects the amino acids of hair follicles from oxidation and allows the follicles to synthetize keratin (Tenore et al, J Med Food, Jan 2018 - Badolati et al, Nutrients, Oct 2018). You can eat the fresh fruit, however annurca apple isn’t easy to find in other places than Campania, in alternative you can take the dry extract that, on the contrary, you can easily find in chemist’s or herbalist’s shops and that shows the same beneficial effects as the fresh fruit. Indeed, the ability to lower cholesterol and to counteract hair loss have been demonstrated also with the intake of oral extracts (Badolati et al, Nutrients, Oct 2018 - Tenore et al, J Med Food, Mar 2017).
