The dittany of Crete, or Origanum dictamnus, is a perennial plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family and native of Crete island. Known since the days of the ancients, is sung by Homer and Virgil. It can grow in the ground or in vase and is characterized by gray-green leaves covered by fluff and delicate flowers of a pale pink color. The dittany of Crete is an aromatic plant, in fact, leaves and flowers with a oregano-like scent can be added to salads but also meat dishes or fish. In addition to this the dittany of Crete has also beneficial properties thanks to the antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and digestive action. You can use it both for internal use by preparing a herbal tea and for external use.
Herbal tea
With the dittany flowers you can prepare an infusion in case of digestive problems but also abdominal colic and colitis. Get 5 cm flowery top and leave to brew for ten minutes in a cup of water, filter and drink.
External application on the skin
You can prepare a poultice by preparing a mush with flowers and leaves: in this way you obtain a remedy that can be applied on the skin in case of acne, pimples and other irritations.
