Elecampane, also known as horse-heal or elfdock, scientific name Inula helenium, belongs to the Asteraceae or Composite family and is characterized by very beautiful yellow flowers that can be admired from the beginning of spring until advanced autumn. Elecampane, already known by the ancients, is beneficial to the airway health, calms cough, acts against bronchitis, even chronic, and asthma due to an expectorant and antiseptic action.

In addition to this, the remedy has also diuretic properties, helps the kidneys and is useful against gout and rheumatism, cleanses the blood and calms sour stomach and nausea. Finally, it can be also used to treat skin problems such as acne and dermatitis. Let's see how you can take it, but be careful because taking too much the remedy can cause vomiting. Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding or if you are taking diuretic drugs.

Mother Tincture

30-50 drops once a day without food, to treat airways, gout and rheumatism.

Herbal tea of roots

Boil a little more than a cup of water, remove from the heat and infuse a tablespoon of elecampane roots for ten minutes, filter and drink up to two cups a day in case of cough and for a diuretic effect.

Decoction for external use

Bring to boil half a handful of roots in a liter of water for five minutes, then remove from the heat and let it rest for ten minutes, then filter and let it cool down. Soak a gauze and apply it on the skin in case of dermatitis or acne.

Steam inhalation

To treat respiratory problems you can prepare a very strong decoction by boiling one liter of water with two handfuls of roots of the plant, boil it for five minutes, then remove from the heat, cover your head with a towel and breathe the vapors.
