The hamamelis, also known as common or American witch-hazel, is a plant with astringent, anti-inflammatory and anti-hemorrhagic properties. The witch-hazel protects blood vessels and can be used to treat diarrhea, it helps also in case of sore throat and gum inflammations, but especially it is a remedy in case of hemorrhoids and other disorders of the circulatory system such as varicose veins, phlebitis, cellulite and capillary fragility, since it strengthens the walls of blood vessels and prevents stagnation. Thanks to anti-hemorrhagic action the witch-hazel can be used to provide relief in case of painful and excessive menstruation. As an external use this plant can be used as a remedy in case of irritated, reddened skin, with couperose or acne, in this case it is possible to find the ointment of hamamelis in a herbalist’s shop.
Herbal tea
Leave to infuse a tablespoon of hamamelis leaves in a cup of boiling water for 10 minutes. Filter and drink two cups a day preferably between meals. You can also use the herbal tea to perform gargling in case of inflammations of the oral cavity and of the throat.
Mother tincture: 30 drops 3 times a day for periods of time of two months.
