INCI of cosmetics, you know what you are applying on skin Part 7, the perfumes

INCI of cosmetics indicates the ingredients that appear in a formulation, today we will analyze the perfumes that are always added to creams, shampoos or other cosmetic products

Index
  1. Perfumes

INCI is the detailed list of ingredients that, by law, should be reported on the pack of cosmetics, from creams to shampoos. Why is the INCI so important? Because in a lot of products that we daily use to take care of our beauty there are often irritating or polluting substances that are better to avoid for the health of our body and Earth. Today we will see another class of substances that can be found in cosmetics, the perfumes.

Perfumes

Smell is one of the most used senses. It may often happen that, when we try to remember passed events it is easily to recall the smells and the scents linked with that period. When we eat a new dish it is automatic, before we eat, to bring it to the nose. To perfume are dedicated books, like the well known novel of 1985 written by Patrick Suesking, Perfume, set in 18th century Paris where each event or character are described through their smell. All this to say that smell has a pivotal role, also in cosmetics, that are often chosen because of their particular fragrance. The problem is that, in most products, synthetic perfumes, created in labs, are added, and these perfumes are considered to be a cause of allergies to skin and dermatitis. Synthetic perfumes use the aromatic molecules alone that are often poorly tolerated, on the contrary at the natural condition these molecules appear together with other substances and don’t cause allergies. In the INCI of cosmetics the synthetic perfumes are indicated by the generic name fragrance or parfum, except 26 substances that are considered to be highly allergenic and are reported explicitly in INCI. When the fragrance is of natural origin the name of the used plant is reported directly. Here the list of the 26 allergenic substances, Amyl cinnamal, Amylcinnamyl alcohol, Benzyl alcohol, Benzyl salicylate, Cinnamyl alcohol, Cinnamal, Citral, Coumarin, Eugenol, Geraniol, Hydroxycitronellal, Hydroxymethylpentyl-cyclohexenecarboxaldehyde, Isoeugenol, Anisyl alcohol, Benzyl benzoate, Benzyl cinnamate, Citronellol, Farnesol, Hexyl cinnamal, Butylphenyl methylpropional, d-Limonene, Linalool, Methyl 2-Octynoate, Alpha-isomethyl ionone , Evernia prunastri extract, Evernia furfuracea extract.
