The African Kigelia, known as the sausage tree due to the elongated shape of its fruit, is a typical plant of tropical Africa. From Kigelia very interesting preparations for our beauty are obtained. The creams prepared with Kigelia extract have in fact antioxidant, firming and nourishing properties and are able also to stimulate the microcirculation. Thanks to these effects, the creams based on extracts of kigelia are very appreciated to protect the skin from damages of the sunlight and to tone and make the skin more elastic, especially the skin of décolleté, arms or neck. This action of kygelia is due to its content in isoflavones and steroidal saponins, that act on skin and muscles by bringing back tone and elasticity (Binic et al, Evid Based Complement Alternat Med, 2013). But the properties of kigelia do not end there, the remedy also has an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory action (Picerno et al, J Nat Prod, 2005) and brings benefit in case of skin problems such as acne, itching, wounds or dermatitis. After the bath, when the body is damp, in order to allow better absorption of the product, you can apply on the area of décolleté, arms and shoulders a little cream based on extracts of kigelia. Alternatively, you can also use kigelia oil, which has the same effects as the cream and can also be applied on the face and on crow's feet. Creams based on kigelia or kigelia oil can be found in herbalist’s shops or online.
