Luffa operculata is a form of luffa, a climbing plant belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family that includes also pumpkin, watermelon, melon and cucumber. Luffa operculata is one of the most appreciated natural remedies used to treat rhinitis, sinusitis and hay fever and you can easily find it in herbalist’s or chemist’s shops in the form of a nasal spray. Scientific studies have shown that luffa is beneficial and efficient to counteract these type of illnesses, indeed, according to a research published in 2015 (Scalia et al, Braz J Otorhinolaryngol), luffa shows antibacterial activity to three bacteria mainly responsible for upper respiratory tract infections, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Streptococcus pyogenes. Another scientific study has demonstrated the efficacy of a nasal spray based on luffa operculata in the treatment of hay fever, the mentioned study hasn’t just observed the beneficial action of the remedy but also that this remedy is well tolerated (Weiser et al, Forsch Komplementarmed, 1999).
