Evergreen magnolia, or Magnolia grandiflora, is a medicinal plant of the Magnoliaceae family of ancient origin, since traces of this plant date back more than 95 million years ago. The magnolia bark is used to obtain a highly appreciated anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant remedy used in traditional Chinese medicine to counteract diarrhea, cough and problems of the urinary tract. Moreover, according to a research carried out in 1997 by a team of scientists from the Gunma University School of Medicine, Maebashi, Japan, the magnolia bark is characterized by a strong anti-anxiety activity since it acts by reducing stress and inhibiting cortisol, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands and called stress hormone since its production increases in case of physical and mental stress. This property of magnolia is mainly due to two substances, the honokiol and the magnolol. Honokiol possesses in fact an anti-anxiety action in prolonged treatment without inducing dependence or other negative effects on memory or muscles. The remedy is therefore applied to treat anxiety, hyperexcitability, nervousness, intense stress, difficulty concentration, sleep disturbances. You can take the remedy in the form of tablets, which you can also find in combination with other remedies with a complementary action such as lemon balm, linden or chamomile, or, alternatively, in the form of mother tincture, 20-30 drops in water from 1 to 3 times a day.
