Natural beauty, watermelon, food for skin

Watermelon can become an ingredient for anti-aging and anti-acne face masks, useful for counteracting wrinkles, dry skin and dark spots

Watermelon is the fruit of summer. With its red, fresh and juicy pulp it is the joy of adults and children on the hottest days. Watermelon is also a particularly healthy, moisturizing and antioxidant choice. In fact, watermelon contains water, vitamin C and easily assimilable lycopene. But what to do with that slice of watermelon that inevitably remains in the bowl? Don't throw it away but reuse it as a precious cosmetic. In fact, watermelon is not only nourishment for the body but also… for the skin, as we will see later.

Watermelon as a cosmetic, what science says

Yes, watermelon pulp can also be applied topically and thus become a powerful anti-aging and anti-acne remedy. Indeed, scientific studies have shown that applying watermelon juice on the face has increased skin hydration and elasticity [1]. Not only that, the watermelon pulp contains lycopene, which is a valuable antioxidant of the carotenoid family. Well, topical applications of lotions containing lycopene have been shown to protect the skin from the damage of pollution, which, among other effects, also causes hyperpigmentation and skin inflammation, and from photoaging, reducing the appearance of erythema and dark spots. In addition to these properties, face masks containing lycopene have been shown to regulate sebum production and fight infections such as acne [2].

Watermelon masks, the best recipes to make at home

Watermelon can therefore become a valid cosmetic for all skin types, mature skin, irritated or sunburned skin as well as young acne-prone skin. Whatever your skin type, start by blending the watermelon pulp you have available, taking care to remove the seeds first.

Then, in case of mature skin or with photoaging, you can combine watermelon with yogurt. Studies have shown that face masks containing yogurt reduce wrinkles and improve hydration, elasticity and luminosity of the skin, which also appears plumper [3][4]. In a small bowl, mix 3 tablespoons of very thick yogurt, such as Greek yogurt, and two tablespoons of watermelon juice. Apply to clean face and leave on for 15 minutes, then rinse and continue with your usual treatment. Instead, in case of acne-prone skin, but also sunburned or inflamed skin, you can take advantage of the synergy with cucumber, which hydrates and soothes irritated skin [5]. Blend a piece of cucumber, 5-6 centimeters long, and add a spoonful of watermelon juice. Apply to face for 15 minutes, then rinse and continue with your usual treatment.
