Yogurt is a healthy and nutritious snack or breakfast, but it can also become a precious ally for the health and beauty of our hair. In fact, in the form of a mask to be applied to the scalp and lengths, yogurt hydrates, soothes and brings important benefits, which today we will explore in depth on the basis, as always, of the most interesting scientific research. Finally, we will propose recipes for preparing yoghurt hair masks at home, suitable for all hair types.

Yogurt hair mask, what science says

The topical application of yogurt-based products helps to exfoliate and hydrate the skin of the scalp, is soothing, heals and eliminates excess sebum (Habeebuddin et al, Pharmaceutics, 2022). Not only that, the lactic acid contained in yogurt helps to counteract skin irritation and seborrheic dermatitis, which can affect the scalp (Emtestam et al, Mycoses, 2012). Finally, yogurt probiotics relieve oxidative stress, improve the skin barrier and hair quality (Franca et al, Dermatol Ther, 2021).

Yoghurt hair mask, the DIY recipe

You can find yogurt hair masks very easily on the market. However, it is also possible to make one at home, simply and with few ingredients. Here are some ideas. The base, for all hair types, is yogurt, which should be white, possibly organic, without added sugars and perhaps with live cultures. Pour three tablespoons of yogurt into a bowl. At this point, based on your needs, you can customize the mask. For example, in case of dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis and scalp irritation it may be useful to add half a teaspoon of honey (Al Waili et al, Eur J Med Res, 2001). In the case of dry, thin and damaged hair, you can instead add a teaspoon of coconut oil melted quickly in a double boiler, useful for preventing and counteracting the loss of proteins from the hair (Rele et al, J Cosmet Sci, 2003). In the case of greasy hair, however, help comes from aloe gel, which helps balance the production of sebum, you can add a teaspoon to your mask. After preparing the mask, moisten your head and hair, then apply the mask to the scalp, massaging well, and finally distribute it along the lengths. Leave to act for 20-30 minutes, then rinse with shampoo and complete with conditioner, according to your habit.
