Large glasses that hung over the nose, hair styled in braids up to the shoulders and long tufts starting from the temples, called dog ears, a coat with bulky pleats across the back giving the effect of a hump, rings in the ears, a huge necktie, trousers that made the knees look swollen... they called them the incredibles, and they were the young French, exponents of fashion in the years after the French Revolution. Imagining them makes you smile a little, but you have to think that this must have been the reaction to the violence and horrors they had to witness in those brutal years. Women fared much better. The marvelous, as the young French women representing fashion were called, were inspired by ancient Greece with impalpable tunics, which wrapped the body and enhanced the body shapes, and sandals tied to the ankles which made them similar to goddesses. Among them, one stood out, the queen of the marvelous, Madame Tallien, a woman of unquestionable charm also capable of determining the fate, through her influence, of one of the great protagonists of the French Revolution, Robespierre, creating the conditions for his dismissal. It was also Madame Tallien who launched a particular trend, still used today, namely that of decorating the toes with rings! But Madame Tallien is also famous for her beauty recipes, which have not been lost and have passed through the centuries reaching us. One of these recipes is useful for maintaining the freshness and youth of the skin, using... strawberries! Let us therefore be inspired by the beauty secrets of a woman who has unquestionably marked history, a woman who is an icon of charm, a woman like Madame Tallien.
Madame Tallien's strawberry milk
Get some ripe strawberries, preferably organic. Wash them well and blend them until smooth. Pour the mixture into a small bowl and add a little milk, mix. Apply to a clean face and leave on for a few hours.
Then wash with water and spray rose water. Continue with your usual treatment.
Strawberry milk, what science says
The great French herbalist Messegue talks about strawberries as a precious beauty ingredient. Strawberry juice, in fact, keeps the skin fresh, cleanses and protects it. Not only that, as scientific studies state, strawberry, containing ellagitannins, ellagic acid, anthocyanins and vitamin C, is antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, counteracts photoaging, helps make the skin more toned and elastic (Gasparrini et al, Molecules, 2017 - Michalak et al, Nutrients, 2021). The addition of milk enriches the cosmetic product. In fact, milk, when applied topically, has a cleansing action and, especially if from donkeys, is also anti-aging (Kazimierska et al, Molecules, 2021)!
