Small ideas to clean the skin without attacking it but respecting its natural balance and avoiding a worsening of acne, blackheads, greasy skin and dull skin

The skin is the largest organ we have, it is the connection between our body and the outside, it protects us. However, sometimes we forget that the skin is also very delicate and it often happens to mistreat it with very aggressive products when it comes to cleaning it. Whenever we act on the skin we modify it, even using simple water can temporarily alter the protective barrier of the skin (Gfatter et al, Dermatology, 1997). However, there are products that more than others alter the balance of the skin, for example, soaps that make a lot of foam and that are not natural, namely not obtained only from vegetable oils, can increase the pH of the skin, which can react by irritating or worsening the condition of greasy skin and acne. So today we talk about how it is possible to clean the facial skin while respecting it (Prakash et al, J Clin Aesthet Dermatol, 2017).

Oil cleansing

Oil cleansing is the technique for which the skin is cleaned and impurities, dirt and make-up are removed thanks to a plant based oil. It has been shown that oil cleansing is the most effective treatment for removing water proof products such as make-up or sun creams but also the gentlest on the skin, respecting it and without causing redness and dryness (Chen et al, J Cosmet Dermatol, 2020). Moisten a cotton pad with water and pour a little vegetable oil over it, jojoba oil is excellent but grapeseed oil or sunflower oil are equally good. Pass the disk on your face a few times, then rinse your face and dry it. This remedy also works as a makeup remover. And if the makeup is particularly abundant or resistant, you can use coconut oil, but this oil should be used carefully, especially in case of acne-prone skin since it is comedogenic. After rinsing your face, spray some floral water and apply a few drops of serum oil or face cream.

Milk and cream

Milk and cream can be used as mild cleansers. In fact, the presence of fats helps, as in oil cleansing, to remove dirt and impurities and lactic acid acts as a peeling, removing dead cells, leaving the skin radiant and rejuvenated (Tang et al, Molecules, 2018). Mix 200 ml of cream and 2 drops of lavender essential oil, which is relaxing and antiseptic. Apply the product with a cotton pad, massage on the face and then remove the excess with another cotton pad.

Alternatively, you can also use the properties of cucumber when it is in season, which soothes irritated skin and leaves it nourished and toned (Mukherjeeet al, Phytotherapy, 2013). Grate about 5 centimeters of cucumber, pour into a glass of milk. Heat and simmer for five minutes. Remove from heat and filter. Apply the milk over your face with a cotton pad. What if you don't have cucumber but a little aloe gel? Excellent, since aloe heals, soothes irritation and burns, is antioxidant and anti-inflammatory (Rahmani et al, Pharmacogn Rev, 2015). Mix a glass of milk with half a glass of aloe gel, always shake before use, then pour a little of the product onto a disk and pass it on your face. Preparations with milk can also remove make-up, but if it is particularly heavy or waterproof then it is better to resort to oil cleansing. These preparations can be stored in the refrigerator for a maximum of five days. After the treatment, always spray a floral water as a tonic and complete with serum oil or face cream.


Clays can be used for facial cleansing, they absorb bacteria and impurities, refresh the skin and promote healing processes (Williams et al, Int Geol Rev, 2010). However, clays are more suitable for cleaning in the morning and not in the evening as they are unable to remove makeup. In a bowl, mix 2 tablespoons of clay, 1 teaspoon of jojoba oil, and 2 tablespoons of rose water. If you wish, you can also use a little milk to take advantage of its illuminating properties. Gently massage, leave on for a few minutes, then rinse.

As for the type of clay, green clay is the most cleansing, especially useful in case of acne and impure skin, red clay is ideal for sensitive skin and white clay is good for all skin types.
