Every day, we apply on skin several cosmetic products, often without thinking about the ingredients they contain. But the skin sometimes reminds us that it needs more loving care through itching, irritations, acne, blackheads but also wrinkles that can be a response to some aggressive substances that a cream or a serum may contain. The INCI, the label that by law must include all the ingredients of a cosmetic, can certainly help us and allow us to choose products that really take care of our beauty. However, an alternative can be to prepare by ourselves small cosmetic products, inspired by the great tradition of the past and able to make us feel like kings and queens. These recipes are simple, as simple were the cosmetics of the past, but effective. Today we see how to prepare at home the first face and body cream in history, the mother of all creams, created by Galen, a Greek physician who lived in the second century A.C. . The cream has been called cold cream, since it leaves a freshness effect on the skin. But let’s see its preparation, which you can reproduce by yourself at home since it is very simple and requires only three ingredients, beeswax, rose water and a vegetable oil, olive oil in the original recipe of Galen. However, since we have, nowadays, a wider choice for what concerns the plant based oils, we can replace the olive oil, really too heavy, with macadamia oil, highly nourishing and rejuvenating, fantastic for mature skin, or jojoba oil, ideal for acne-prone skins, but also a mixture between the two oils can be good, you can choose according to your needs. The result is a thick cream, highly nutrient and protective, perfect for cracked hands and feet, with wounds, but also to protect the skin from the cold, ideal for this period. Pour 60 grams of vegetable oil, macadamia and / or jojoba, into a small saucepan, add 20 grams of beeswax, heat in a water bath until the wax is dissolved. In another saucepan, always in a water bath, heat 20 grams of rose water until it reaches the same temperature of the oil. Pour the rose water slowly into the oil and mix with a teaspoon, even better with an electric mixer. When the aqueous and oily parts are emulsified, let it cool down, stir every now and then. And the cream is ready! As a preservative you can add 5 drops of grapefruit seed extract, keep the cream in a dry and cool place, away from temperature changes. And to add also a little fragrant scent, you can add a few drops of essential oil, such as lavender essential oil, very delicate on the skin. In short, this cold cream is a product of beauty for everyone and that contains the knowledge of the sages of the past!
