Hot weather, car and ... nausea. How many times do you experience this unpleasant sensation? But nausea can also affect us while we are traveling in the sea, if we take certain medicines or during pregnancy. As always, natural remedies can help us. We’ll therefore see, on the basis of scientific research and publications on the topic, quick first aid interventions to keep nausea at bay.
Bread, butter and anchovies
Here is a snack to prepare, as needed, when you feel sick, in case of car sickness or seasickness or during pregnancy. Although it may seem strange to eat bread, butter and anchovies, in reality, as pointed out by Dr. Aufiero in his book The nutritional and therapeutic role of food, this recipe helps to rebalance the electrolyte imbalance that caused nausea. Toast a slice of bread, preferably brown bread, spread a knob of butter and add, cut into small pieces, a couple of anchovies in oil.
Ginger
Ginger, or Zingiber officinale, is a remedy in case of nausea, both the typical nausea of ??pregnancy and that caused by traveling by car or by boat (Palatty et al, Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition, 2010). The anti-nausea action of ginger has not yet been fully understood but it is believed that ginger, thanks to its carminative, aromatic and absorbent properties, is able to block gastric reactions and, consequently, also the body's response in the form of nausea (Lien et al, American Journal of Physiology, 2002). You can eat, as needed, a piece of fresh or candied ginger.
Essential oils
Although the available studies are not unanimous, it seems that inhaling peppermint essential oil can help counteract nausea (Tayarani-Najaran et al, Ecancermedicalscience, 2013). More agreement, however, is found on the anti-nausea action of two essential oils, cardamom oil and lemon oil. The first proved beneficial in case of nausea caused by medicines and the other also in pregnancy (Yavari kia et al, Iran Red Crescent Med J., 2014 - Ozgoli et al, Int J Prev Med, 2018). You can pour a couple of drops of essential oil on a handkerchief and smell it as needed.
