Grapefruit seeds

Antioxidant, antimicrobial, antibacterial and antiviral properties, useful to treat the cold sores but also fungal infections, candida, cystitis, sore throat, cough and aphthae, useful to disinfect the hands and to counteract acne and pimples, used as a preservative in the DIY cosmetics

Grapefruit, scientific name citrus paradisi, is a plant belonging to the Rutaceae family whose fruits are appreciated as a basis for juices or smoothies. However, today we aren’t speaking about the grapefruit pulp but about the seeds, that are contained inside the fruit. From these seeds an extract for external use with antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral and antioxidant properties is obtained, this extract is indeed able to act on the structure of the cell membrane of the pathogens and therefore inhibits the proliferation of fungus, bacteria and virus. Very useful on trip as well as in daily life, you can add a couple of drops of grapefruit seed extract to the water of a foot bath against fungal infections of the toenails, to the soap for hands as a detergent against bacteria, to the soap for face to counteract acne and pimples, to the shower gel but also to the toothpaste as an emergency remedy in case of cold sores and stomatitis. Again, against cold sores and irritations of the mouth as well as sore throat and cough you can prepare gargle by adding 2-3 drops of grapefruit seed extract to a glass of water.

Moreover, in case of cold sores you can apply on the part a drop of grapefruit seed extract previously diluted in a teaspoon of a plant based oil such as extra virgin olive oil. This extract is also useful in case of candida or cystitis, in this case you can add 2 drops of grapefruit seed extract to a teaspoon of your feminine wash or, in alternative, you can prepare sitz bath by adding 2 drops of extract in 250 ml of chamomile, go on with the treatment for 3 days. Some drops of grapefruit seed extract can often be added to do-it-yourself cosmetics in order to improve the preservation of the product. Finally, some consideration should be done. In the years the grapefruit seed extract has been the subject of debates. First of all an American study of 2007 showed that some analyzed extracts were contaminated with toxic substances such as benzethonium chloride and triclosan.

Then, according to some scientists, the properties of the extract don’t seem to be confirmed. However, recent studies (2016 on the journal Planta medica by a team of the University of Mississippi) have highlighted that most of the analyzed products don’t contain toxic substances while they are rich in antioxidants. Other studies have demonstrated the efficacy of grapefruit seed extract for what concerns the antimicrobial action (Journal of alternative and complementary medicine, 2002 or also Acta pharmaceutica, 2004 by a team of Zagreb University). Anyway, it is necessary to be sure to buy high quality products obtained from the grapefruit seeds and not with added substances that mask the low quality and can also be toxic.
