it’s easy to say salt… but actually there are a lot of different types of salt that you can buy, some types are healthier than other varieties. For example, the refined salt commonly used to season the dishes in cooking is the most processed and the richest in sodium chloride that, of course, is an indispensable substance for life but, if in too high quantity, can cause damages to the gastric mucosa, an increase in blood pressure and a worsening of osteoporosis. If you consider that sodium is also contained in other foods that you eat daily then you can understand that its addition to the dishes is really an extra. However, there are other types of salts that represent a more interesting choice because they have, together with sodium, other elements that can be beneficial for the health. An example is given by the unrefined sea salt. This type of salt isn’t subjected to the refining process and is directly obtained through evaporation of the sea water. It is grey colored and isn’t bleached. For this reason it doesn’t contain just sodium chloride but also other substances such as iodine, that in the case of the refined salt is lacking except when it is artificially added. Iodine isn’t synthetized by our body and for this reason it should be introduced with diet in order to allow a good functioning of thyroid that influences the metabolism, the nervous system and the growth. Other substances that it is possible to find in unrefined sea salt are calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, manganese, zinc, silicon, to name just a few but in total there are about 70 different types of substances. This is a very important characteristic because in this way the percentage of sodium chloride is lower and these substances are used by the body in order to guarantee health and a proper functioning of various processes. We have just seen a valid alternative to refined salt that can be added in pinch to your preparations. But pay attention not to exceed with the quantity, indeed the international guide lines indicate that a good choice is not to exceed 2,5 g of salt every day. Moreover, unrefined sea salt can be also an ally for the beauty, in fact it is possible to use it for great body scrubs, is able to smooth the skin, to remove the death cells, to tone the tissues by promoting the absorption of the liquids in excess and to improve the microcirculation. You just have to mix 1 tablespoon of unrefined sea salt, coarse for a deeper action and fine for a more delicate action, and a tablespoon of a plant based oil, such as, for example, the sweet almond oil and massage on the body. Better not to use the salt scrub on the face because the grains are large and sharp and the risk is to irritate the skin. Do you have sore throat, irritations of the mouth or bad breath? Add a tablespoon of salt to a glass of lukewarm water and gargle, the remedy kills the bacteria and is anti-inflammatory. Or, if you suffer from eczema or other skin irritations or in case of muscle pain and tensions add a handful of salt to the water of the bath ad stay for fifteen minutes.
